Step 1
Application

Step 2
Once your application has been reviewed, you will be contacted by your personal English Tree representative with a suitable position.

Step 3
Phone interview with the employer.

Step 4
We send you the contract with the school, previously proofread by us. If you are satisfied with the terms and conditions, you sign the employment contract.

Step 5
You send us the following documents by Fed Ex or UPS:
1. Completed Application For Certificate of Eligibility Form (We will send this to you)
2. One photocopy of your valid passport (the page with your picture on it)
3. Two passport sized photographs 40mm (Height) by 30mm (Width) of your face
4. A photocopy of your college or university diploma
5. A formal letter stating your reasons for wanting to work and live in Japan (addressed to The Japanese Ministry of Justice)
6. A copy of your employment contract, signed and dated by you (We will send this to you)
7. Criminal Record Check (obtained from your local police department, usually for a nominal fee)

We require the documents mentioned above to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility stating that you are eligible for a Specialist in Humanities/International Services Working Visa (different visas are issued for different purposes, however, the Specialist in Humanities/International Services Working Visa is standard for foreigners who will teach English in Japan). The Certificate of Eligibility is issued by the Ministry of Justice in Japan after the institute you will be working for makes an application on your behalf. This application must be made by a sponsor in Japan. It cannot be made by the applicant him/herself. (*Please note that Certificates of Eligibility expire after three months. An applicant must obtain his/her visa and arrive in Japan within three months of the issue date of the Certificate of Eligibility. If an applicant has not traveled to Japan before the expiry date, then a new Certificate of Eligibility must be obtained before applying for the visa and traveling to Japan.)

Step 6
The Employer (the institute you will be working for) submits your documents to Japanese Immigration to get the Certificate of Eligibility. It usually takes roughly 4 weeks to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility once all the paperwork is submitted. However, this varies from time to time so it is good to get all the necessary documentation to us (listed above) as soon as possible.

Step 7
Once the certificate of eligibility is issued by the Ministry of Justice in Japan, your institute will deliver it to you immediately so that you can apply for your working visa at the nearest Japanese Embassy or Consulate in your home country.

Step 8
You apply for your work visa at the nearest Japanese Embassy or Consulate in your home country (click here for a list of embassies in official English speaking countries). To make your application at an embassy or consulate, you will need to bring the following documents:

4. Two official visa application forms, available at the nearest embassy or consulate
5. Details pertaining to your employer (will be provided by your employer)

Generally speaking, the fees are about 3,000 yen for a single-entry visa, 6,000 yen for a double-entry or multiple-entry visa (fees are paid in local currency).
